Exam Question

Write short notes on each of the following with respect to their contribution to the strength of ships:

(a) Strake (4)

(b) Bracket (4)

(c) Stringer (4)

(d) Girder (4)

Reference Answer

### (a) Strake
A strake is a continuous course of plating running longitudinally along the ship's bottom, sides, or deck. Each strake consists of multiple plates welded end-to-end.
**Contribution to Strength (4 Marks):**
* **Primary Longitudinal Strength:** The shell and deck plating, arranged in strakes, form the flanges and web of the ship's hull girder. They are the primary members resisting the global longitudinal bending moments of hogging and sagging. The strakes furthest from the neutral axis, such as the **Sheer Strake** (at the junction of the main deck and side shell) and the **Keel/Garboard Strake** (adjacent to the keel), experience the highest tensile and compressive stresses and are therefore made of thicker steel with higher scantlings.
