Reference Answer

### (a) Riveting
**Concept**
Riveting is a permanent mechanical fastening method used to join two or more plates or structural members. The process involves inserting a cylindrical fastener, known as a rivet, through aligned holes in the parts to be joined. One end of the rivet has a manufactured head, and the other end (the tail) is then formed into a second head, called the 'driven head' or 'shop head'.
In hot riveting, a key process for shipbuilding and boiler construction, the rivet is heated to a light cherry-red color (approximately 1000-1100°C). As the hot rivet cools after the head is formed, it contracts longitudinally. This contraction exerts a powerful clamping force on the plates, holding them tightly together. This frictional force between the plates carries a significant portion of the shear load, adding to the strength provided by the rivet shank itself.
