Exam Question

Write short notes on the following:

(a) Indicated Power (3)

(b) Specific fuel oil consumption (3)

(c) Brake power (3)

(d) Mechanical efficiency (3)

(e) Thermal efficiency (4)

Reference Answer

**(a) Indicated Power (IP)**
Indicated Power (IP) represents the total power developed within the engine cylinders by the combustion of fuel. It is the work done by the expanding gases on the piston crown during the working stroke, before any frictional losses or power absorbed by engine auxiliaries.
* **Concept and Definition**: IP is a theoretical measure of the power generated by the gas pressure acting on the piston surface over a given distance and time. It is a fundamental parameter for understanding the thermodynamic performance within the cylinder.
* **Measurement**: IP is determined from an engine indicator diagram (or 'P-V diagram'), which plots the cylinder pressure against the corresponding cylinder volume (or piston displacement) during a complete engine cycle. The area enclosed by this P-V diagram represents the net work done per cycle within that cylinder.
