### Principle of Operation
A four-ram electro-hydraulic steering gear system operates on the Rapson-Slide principle. It converts the linear motion of hydraulic rams into a powerful turning moment (torque) on the rudder stock. This design is favored on large vessels due to its ability to generate very high torque, its reliability, and its built-in redundancy, which is mandated by SOLAS regulations for certain vessel types like large tankers.
The system consists of two pairs of rams acting on a tiller assembly keyed to the rudder stock. Each pair is powered by an independent electro-hydraulic power unit, providing full redundancy.
