Reference Answer

Q1 (a) Precautions When Testing the Insulation of Generator Cables and Wiring Connected to an AVR Unit (6 marks)
When performing insulation resistance (IR) testing on generator cables and associated wiring connected to an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) , the following precautions must be taken:
Isolate the AVR : Always disconnect the AVR from the circuit before testing. AVR components—especially electronic circuits —can be damaged by high voltage from the insulation tester (typically 500V–1000V ).
Discharge the Circuit : Ensure all capacitors and residual voltages are fully discharged before testing to prevent false readings or shock hazards .
