System Design Limitations (SDL) are the operational and water quality parameters that define the boundaries for the correct and effective functioning of a Ballast Water Management System (BWMS). These limitations are determined and verified by the manufacturer during the rigorous land-based and shipboard testing required for Type Approval, as mandated by the IMO's BWM Convention (Regulation D-3) and the BWMS Code.
