(a) Describe, with the aid of a sketch, the safety valves for an auxiliary boiler.

(b) Identify, with reasons, the parts that require particularly close attention during overhaul

(c) Describe how the safety valves are reset after an overhaul.

Reference Answer

### (a) Description of Auxiliary Boiler Safety Valves
An auxiliary boiler is fitted with at least two safety valves of an approved type. The most common type is the **Improved High-Lift, Spring-Loaded Safety Valve**. This design ensures a rapid, full opening (a 'pop' action) to discharge a large volume of steam quickly, and a positive, sharp reseating action to minimize steam loss.
#### Construction
The main components are housed within a cast steel valve chest with an inlet connected to the boiler steam drum and an outlet directed to the atmosphere via a waste steam pipe.
