Reference Answer

### (a) Description of a Typical Bulk CO2 Installation
A typical fixed fire-fighting installation for a machinery space, as mandated by SOLAS, is a high-pressure or low-pressure Carbon Dioxide (CO2) system. The following describes a low-pressure bulk CO2 system, commonly found on larger vessels.
**1. System Concept:**
The system is designed to totally flood the machinery space with CO2, an inert gas, which displaces oxygen, thereby extinguishing the fire. The quantity of CO2 is calculated to achieve a minimum concentration of 34% by volume in the largest machinery space protected, which reduces the ambient oxygen level to below that required for combustion (typically <15%).
