Exam Question

With reference to hull cathodic protection systems of the impressed current type: (16)

(a) Sketch and describe such a system

(b) Explain how protection may be ensured for the rudder and propeller

(c) State any precautions that should be taken when this type of system is installed.

Reference Answer

### (a) Sketch and Description of an Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) System
**Concept of Operation:**
The fundamental principle of an Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) system is to suppress the natural electrochemical corrosion process on a ship's hull. When immersed in seawater (an electrolyte), the steel hull develops anodic and cathodic areas, leading to galvanic corrosion where metal is lost at the anodes. The ICCP system makes the entire submerged hull surface a cathode by impressing a controlled direct current from external anodes, thereby halting corrosion.
