### (a) Working of an Oil/Water Separator
**Principle of Operation:**
The operation of a typical two-stage oily water separator (OWS) is based on two primary physical principles:
1. **Stokes' Law:** The difference in specific gravity between oil and water. Oil, being less dense, will naturally rise and separate from water when the mixture is allowed to stand in a quiescent state.
