Exam Question

With reference to starting air line systems: (16) a) List causes leading to starting air line explosion on a 2 stroke engine. b) List indications that will give warning of above. c) List action, precautions and maintenance required to prevent above.

Reference Answer

### a) Causes Leading to Starting Air Line Explosion
A starting air line explosion requires the presence of three elements: fuel, oxygen, and a source of ignition. The system is inherently rich in oxygen (pressurized air). The causes are therefore centered around the introduction of fuel and an ignition source.
**1. Fuel Accumulation:**
* **Leaky Starting Air Valve:** This is the primary and most common cause. A valve on a cylinder head that is not seating correctly allows a path for fuel oil and/or cylinder lubricating oil to be pushed back into the starting air branch pipe from the combustion chamber during the compression and power strokes.
