(a) Microbial degradation of lubricating oil occurs when microorganisms, such as bacteria, yeast, molds, and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), proliferate and decompose the lubricant, making it unsuitable for use. These microorganisms can be either aerobic or anaerobic.
Conditions that Promote Microbial Growth:
Presence of water
Availability of nutrients
