MARPOL Annex V regulates the prevention of pollution by garbage from ships. It applies to all ships, irrespective of their type, operating in the marine environment. Garbage includes all types of food, domestic, and operational waste, plastics, cooking oil, incinerator ash, cargo residues, animal carcasses, fishing gear, and electronic waste generated during the normal operation of the ship.
