Exam Question

With respect to the High Voltage power systems installation, explain the different types of circuit breaker that are used, comparing them on merits and de-merits. Describe the theory of are phenomenon and the mechanism fitted to mitigate the are. (16)

Reference Answer

Circuit breakers of higher ratings are used in the high voltage system of a shipping vessel, to prevent to arcing from being taking place. There are basically two types of circuit breakers used in the marine high voltage system. They are air circuit breakers and vacuum circuit breakers.
The air circuit breakers are used for system with voltage under 10 kV and can be used for ratings a bit higher too. Whereas the vacuum circuit breakers are used for higher voltage upto 100kV.
The air circuit breaker is relatively cost efficient compared to vacuum circuit breaker. The cost might vary for different ratings too for both.
When an air circuit is energized it makes a relatively loud noise when opening and closing. Whereas the vacuum circuit breaker, when energized doesn't make much noise, compared to air circuit breakers.
